Simon Award Winners and the 2015-2016 WCS Principal and Teacher of the Year!  Nine WCS employees and one school won awards during the 2015 David Simon Excellence in Education Awards held last night at Fike High!! The awards, which debuted in 2010, stand as the highest recognition the school system bestows on an employee or school and recognize exceptional performance. Shout Outs! 1. Children's Hunger Elimination of Wilson (CHEW) Counselors recently shared with me how CHEW has benefited students in their schools. Happy Friday! This has been a great week for education in Wilson County and also across the state! North Carolina celebrated 175 years of public education yesterday with an event in Raleigh highlighting all of the accomplishments made during that time. Shout Outs! 1. Rachel Sprecher, coordinator of grants and special projects, WCS Ms. Sprecher came to WCS in August 2012 as a grant writer but soon established herself as much more. To celebrate the end of the semester, we wanted to do a special edition of OUR STORY this week and highlight one of the hardest working students in our district. LaVondra's story should inspire us all.  LaVondra enrolled at Daniels Learning Center in the Alternative Education Program at the beginning of this school year and only needed English IV to graduate with the 22-Credit Alternative Diploma. Our hearts remain heavy today as we mourn the loss of a member of our WCS family - New Hope Elementary Assistant Principal Sabrina Smith-Epley. Ms. Smith-Epley, an educator for 14 years, passed away unexpectedly Wednesdaynight. This was her first year with WCS, but her impact at New Hope was huge. Ms. Smith-Epley was always on top of communication with students, staff, and parents and was respected by all who came in contact with her. Her love for life, her family and her New Hope family...
