Shout Outs!
1. Winstead Elementary PTO and Staff
Fifth-grade Teacher Cynthia Hardy would like to thank the school's PTO and several of her colleagues for giving their time and energy to make the afterschool SGA Election Dance a success - Ms. Marcell, Ms. Evans, Ms. Best, Ms. Bullock and Ms. Joyner.

2. Kevin Baxter, Associate Dean of ECU Honors College
Kudos to Mr. Baxter for encouraging students to think ahead. He recently spoke to 110 Hunt High students in the AP, AVID and IB programs about ECU Honors College, which recruits "exceptionally talented students of character." Though I'm sure I wouldn't last a day in the rigorous program, I agree with Hunt Teacher Rachel McNeill who emailed me this observation - "With free laundry, a brand new dorm and international travel paid for, I wish I could be an ECU honors student!"

3. Chris Beneck, WCS Instructional Technology Facilitator
From Hunt High Media Coordinator Jerri Moore: "Chris Beneck has done a terrific job in his new role. He has made the transition from the classroom to his new position effortlessly and efficiently while addressing the technology needs of the school staff and students. We are looking forward to a successful Chromebook rollout next week under his direction!?"

4. Michelann Rogers, first-grade teacher, Wells Elementary
From Principal Wendy Sullivan: "I want to thank Ms. Rogers for securing sponsors for our new 7 Habits flags in the school parking lot. She spent quite a bit of time this summer going to area businesses and telling them about the Leader in Me model that Wells is using to teach our kids how to be better leaders. Thanks for advocating for our school!"

5. Tony Howard and Bobby Strickland, WCS Maintenance Department
From Hunt High Teacher Joy Edwards: "Thank you to Mr. Howard and Mr. Strickland for working so diligently to get all the AC issues fixed! They were so nice, polite and helpful as they worked to troubleshoot my lack of AC as quickly as possible. It felt soooo good when it finally started working!"

6. Deloris Reid, Before-School Care Director at Rock Ridge and After-School Care Enrichment Program Site Director at Jones Elementary
From Springfield Middle Receptionist Beatriz Chavez: "Ms. Reid was such a help to me on my child's first day of Before-School Care. I was completely lost, and she told me not to worry about anything and assured me that my child would be taken care of. She could tell I was worried, and she made me feel very safe and secure about leaving my child in her hands (my daughter doesn't speak any English). I love her already!!!"

7. New WCS Teachers
We are so excited to have more than 30 first-year teachers! This includes lateral entry folks as well. Welcome to our WCS Family! We have enjoyed watching names being added to this dry-erase board on our Organizational Development Hall at Central Office. Best of luck and please remember to lean on your colleagues for support. We are here for you!

8. Strategic Plan Forums
The Strategic Plan represents the work of many Wilsonians who believe a strong public school system is essential for the community. Our families expect schools that will keep their children safe while offering an education designed to help students love learning and prepare them for success in life. It's a team effort! Please attend one of two upcoming forums to give your input on the plan for next year. The dates are Sept. 8 at Beddingfield and Sept. 10 at Fike from 7-8:30 p.m. Check out the picture from the meeting at Hunt.

9. James Cooper, custodian and bus driver, Barnes Elementary
Mr. Cooper recently taught the third-graders at Barnes about bus safety. They learned the proper way to board and exit a bus, the new hand signals and the evacuation process. Mr. Cooper is AWESOME and wanted to make sure students understood his expectations from a bus driver's perspective.

10. College Matters Event
The title says it all. Kudos to the Wilson Family YMCA, WCS, Barton College, Wilson Community College and Wilson 20/20 for partnering to bring this event to our high school students on Sept. 19 at Barton. During the sessions, students and parents learn about preparing for college, such as the application process and SAT prep. Pre-registration is required. Check out this link

Highlighting Community Partners

We were moved by BB&T's amazing full-page tribute to Charles Leon Wilson III, senior executive vice president and operations division manager at BB&T, in the Wilson Times last week. Mr. Wilson leaves a lasting legacy that we can all learn from - be wise, humble, thoughtful and unselfish. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers!
For several months, the Wilson Times has been looking for a sponsor to start running the Why I Teach series in the paper every week to highlight one of our teachers. We applaud them for taking a leap of faith as they will start running this spotlight every week anyway in hopes a sponsor will step forward. Can't wait to see the beautiful face of Springfield Middle Teacher Jenasis Barnes in the Schools  section soon!
