Shout Outs!

1. WCS Transportation Department

Driving a school bus is a huge responsibility, and we are so grateful to our bus drivers for transporting our students safely. We also want to thank those in the Bus Garage who worked diligently on the routes. Please encourage everyone you know to be cautious around buses!

2. Annette Thomas, WCS Social Worker

Few people bring as much joy as Ms. Thomas...especially when you are with her hauling tons of school supplies down the halls of Central Office, she loses her keys and a frantic 30-minute search ensues. Her bubbly personality and beautiful smile remained as she recounted all the crazy things that had happened to her that day. All that mattered to her was finding her keys as quickly as possible so she could deliver the supplies to students in need!

3. Dynamic Leadership Participants

The Wilson Chamber of Commerce's Dynamic Leadership program is a top notch leadership experience. Kudos to last year's group (which included Principal Claudia Spencer, Principal Ronnia Cockrell and Grant Writer Rachel Sprecher, who we miss now that she's in Atlanta) for their project of taking kids from Hattie Daniels Day Care to the zoo. We are excited for this year's group - Assistant Superintendent Kelvin Cyrus, Principal Daniel Barnes and Coordinator of Web Communications and Special Projects Jessica Bailey.

4. School-Level United Way Coordinators and Assistant Superintendent Susan Bullock

The WCS United Way campaign kicks off soon, and we are grateful for the coordinators who run the campaigns on top of everything else they do. United Way does so much for our community, and we look forward to supporting it again this year. Assistant Superintendent Susan Bullock is challenging every school to have 100 percent participation.

5. Maritza Figueroa, WCS public relations assistant

If you hear Amber Lynch crying it's because Martiza is off for the next two weeks for her wedding, and she is going to miss her. We wish her the very best and appreciate her organization, creative ideas, sense of humor and the professional way she assists our Hispanic families.

6. Parent Engagement at Darden Middle

Darden Middle had the largest turnout in the school’s history for Open House this year. Fifty percent of the sixth-graders and their parents came out for the sixth-grade orientation and more than 400 parents and students attended the regular Open House. There was standing room only in the auditorium.

7. Donna Malloy and Brian Wagner, WCS Technology Department

The world didn't end...but it sure was close on Monday when Gmail didn't work districtwide. Ms. Malloy and Mr. Wagner fielded hundreds of calls and emails from those of us who were freaking out and remained the masters of customer service until the issue was resolved.

8. Danny Alvarado, senior, Wilson Early College Academy

So often we forget what it was like to be a student and have to step out and try new things as we discovered who we were. Our students are so brave! Five years ago, Danny sat in the back of a Wilson Youth Council meeting just to see what it was about and now he is one of the leaders of the group. We are so proud of Danny and the other high-school students on the Council who have taken on bullying. We wish him the best this school year.

9. Wilson Wellness 5K and Color Run

It's time to register for our second annual Color Run scheduled for Sat., Oct. 17 at 8 a.m. beginning and ending at Paul V Berry Park. It was a blast last year! WCS students and staff can register for $10 until Oct. 9 (includes a t-shirt), and after that it will be $15. Anyone who is not a WCS staff/student can register for $15/$20 depending on when they register. Here's the link:

10. Summer Cline, teacher at Wells Elementary, and Meredith Fychok, teacher at Elm City Elementary

Ms. Cline and Ms. Fychok are two of our finest elementary teachers, and they credit Barton College with their success. The two met in college and have remained close friends. Check out a recent picture of them back on the Barton campus! And Ms. Cline is coming back from maternity leave next week so keep her in your thoughts!
