Glossary of Terms

Emergency Bags – Located in each classroom behind the door and taken outside during evacuations or evacuation drills.  The bags must include class rosters and student information sheets.  Other suggested items include: small flashlights, batteries, tissues, bandages, pens and CPR instructions.

Evacuation – This is a term used to alert staff to exit the building. It requires moving students into safe positions and making sure they are all accounted for. Emergencies that might require an evacuation are fires and bomb threats.        

External Lockdown – All exterior doors of the school are locked but students and staff can move freely inside the school.

Lockdown - This is a term used to describe an emergency at a Wilson County Schools facility.  Lockdown alerts staff that danger exists outside or inside the building.  It requires moving students into safe positions and making sure they are all accounted for.

Reunification - Organized process to reunify students with their parents after an emergency.  This might include parents going to a different site other than the school.

Shelter - This is a term used to alert staff to take shelter in classrooms or in hallways.  It requires moving students into safe positions and making sure they are all accounted for. Emergencies that might require shelter are severe weather or chemical spills near the school building. 

True Lockdown – Students and staff are in locked classrooms out of sight with the lights off.
