Congratulations to the 2017-2018 WCS Principal of the Year, Rock Ridge Elementary Principal Jennifer Lewis!


The WCS Principal of the Year selection process will begin in February 2018.

Criteria for Selection
A candidate for the Wilson County Schools Principal of the Year should merit the respect and admiration of students, teachers, co-workers and parents.  They should be active, not only in their schools, but also in their communities where they distinguish themselves as leaders. A candidate should demonstrate the ability to improve the achievement of students from various backgrounds and with differing capabilities. 

The WCS Principal of the Year must:

  • Be a principal of a North Carolina public school
  • Have at least four years’ experience as an administrator (years may be a combination of assistant principal, principal and central office experience)
  • Be employed as a practicing principal throughout the selection process
  • Hold a valid principal’s license

The WCS Principal of the Year should:

  • Not have served as WCS Principal of the Year within the previous five years
  • Exemplify quality 21st century leadership
  • Lead a school with evidence of positively affecting student achievement
  • Have an educational platform to be communicated within the district as requested

Other qualities of the WCS Principal of the Year include:

  • The ability to inspire and empower teachers to effectively teach students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn
  • Having the respect and admiration of teachers, students, parents and colleagues
  • Playing an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school
  • Being poised, articulate and possess the energy to withstand a taxing schedule as necessary

A call for recommendations for Principal of the Year is sent out via automated phone call.  District-level emails, newsletters, etc. may also be used to solicit nominations.

The Principal of the Year nominees will then be asked to complete an information sheet for publicity purposes and to verify adherence to all WCS Principal of the Year eligibility requirements and other expectations as noted above.

Once verified for participation, the candidate will complete the WCS Principal of the Year portfolio.  A district-level portfolio selection committee consisting of a previous WCS Teacher of the Year, a previous WCS Principal of the Year, a WCS Board of Education member, a Barton College School of Education representative, a WCS parent and Wilson area community member will read and rate the anonymous portfolios.

Each nominee will be interviewed by a district interview selection team consisting of the Chief Operations Officer, the Executive Director of Organizational Development, the Executive Director of Technology, the Public Relations Director, an Instructional Services Executive Director and a WCS Board of Education member.  The members of the interview selection team will rate the candidates’ interview.

After completion of the interviews, site visits to the schools of each nominee will be scheduled. The district classroom visit selection team consisting of an Organizational Development representative, the Coordinator of Web Communications and Special Projects, the Public Relations Director, an Instructional Services Executive Director, a WCS Board of Education member and a Technology Department representative will visit the schools, observe and rate the candidates. The candidate will be responsible for planning a 30-minute site visit for the school visit selection team members.  During the site visit, the following will be addressed:

  • The school’s vision, mission, values and goals for a 21st century population and how they inform the culture of the school
  • Collaboration among staff members
  • Administrator knowledge of 21st century curriculum, instruction, assessment
  • Recruitment, induction, support, evaluation, development and retention of high-performing staff
  • Community/parent engagement
  • Teacher leadership and empowerment
  • Academic Achievement
  • Beautification

The WCS Principal of the Year will be chosen from the sum of the portfolio, interview and site visit scores. The Teacher/Principal of the Year Coordinator, Executive Director of Organizational Development and Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations will calculate and confirm the winner.

The winner of the WCS Principal of the Year for that year will be announced in the fall and will proceed on to the North Central Regional Finals as part of the NC Wells Fargo Principal of the Year state process.

Duties of the WCS Principal of the Year
During the official year of recognition, the WCS Principal of the Year will be expected to complete requirements of the North Central Regional Finals and the NC Wells Fargo Principal of the Year if chosen the Regional Principal of the Year.   The WCS Principal of the Year is expected to attend the fall Teacher of the Year/Principal of the Year banquet and other functions as invited.  At any time, he/she should be willing to be a part of school, district or community functions as invited.  He/she should be ready to speak on his/her educational platform if requested.  Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent’s Office are possible as well.
