Chair Receives Highest Honor

Chair of the Wilson County Board of Education Dr. Christine Fitch was just named this year's Raleigh Dingman Award winner at the annual North Carolina School Boards Association conference. This is the highest honor bestowed on a North Carolina school board member each year. Since 2003, recipients of this honor have served as an ex-officio member of the NC State Board of Education and the NCSBA Board of Directors. The honoree will be expected to attend meetings of both organizations.
This is Dr. Fitch's 27th year on the Wilson County Board of Education. She has been instrumental in building the framework for the school system's success and has had a significant impact in the decision-making process for countless initiatives, which include the following: establishing levels for student performance higher than state mandates in 1998; working with the Wilson County Commissioners to shorten a five-year technology implementation plan to two years, which resulted in the district receiving the Ohana Foundation Award in 2000; supporting efforts to offer the International Baccalaureate Programme at each of the three comprehensive high schools in 2001; approving the implementation of Wilson Early College Academy in partnership with Wilson Community College in 2009; assisting to secure grant funding from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to open an Autism Academy in 2013; approving funds to expand the Building Leadership and Strengths Together (BLAST) peer-to-peer tutoring program to eight schools in August 2015; supporting Rock Ridge Elementary in its quest to earn 2015 National Blue Ribbon status, which was achieved in October 2015; and planning for the Wilson Applied Academy of Technology, the district’s second early college, which will open in the fall of 2016.
