Message from Superintendent Dr. Sean Bulson

Wilson County Schools Superintendent Sean Bulson announced today that he will be resigning from his position effective June 30 to become the Senior Vice President at NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning on July 1.

"I am deeply grateful to the Wilson County Board of Education and the entire Wilson community for the opportunity to serve as superintendent for the last five years.  As a community, we have worked to expand opportunities for the youth of Wilson to succeed in life beyond graduation, to access post-secondary education, and to enter the workforce.  We have developed a strategic plan and a youth master plan to guide us in our work on behalf of our students.  We have established a sustainable leadership pipeline and aligned our work around an ethic of support for students, staff, and families.  We have expanded program offerings to provide rigorous and engaging options for families and students, and we have introduced supports to help us serve our neediest learners."

Dr. Bulson added that he is reassured in the fact that he leaves behind a tremendously talented senior leadership team capable of continuing the district’s work on behalf of the students, staff, and the entire Wilson community.

"It is with mixed emotions that we have learned the intention of Dr. Bulson to resign as the superintendent of Wilson County Schools," said Chair of the Wilson County Board of Education Dr. Christine Fitch. "In the five short years that he has been in leadership here, he has strengthened and increased community support and participation. His willingness to reach community members previously untapped has helped foster the transparency, welcoming environment and support for all that we serve. It was merely a matter of time before others would seek his leadership and guidance. NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning will be well positioned under his leadership to expand its mission to a much broader base in North Carolina and beyond. We wish him the best in all his future professional growth. The Board will begin the necessary process to seek a replacement who will continue the efforts put forth to improve the quality of education for all of our students."

NC New Schools is a leader in educational innovation and recently became NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning as part of their transition to a national organization by expanding to four additional states. Dr. Bulson will join the team as a senior vice president with a particular emphasis on workforce development.  He will work to deepen ties between public schools and business/industry in concert with leaders at the state and local levels including the community college system, the state department of education and other economic and workforce development agencies. Part of his mission will be to emphasize aligning college and work-ready standards for all public school graduates.

"I thank you all for the invaluable opportunity to have served Wilson County Schools," said Bulson. "I am confident you will sustain the relationships we have forged with so many community partners on behalf of our district, and I look forward to working with you in my new role at NC New Schools/Breakthrough Learning.
