Daniels Learning Center Student Intervention Specialist Maurice Barnes and Darden MS Exceptional Children’s Teacher Jennifer Watson received two of the top awards at the Wilson Committee for Persons with Disabilities Awards Luncheon on Oct. 19.

Mr. Barnes was awarded the Professional of the Year Award for motivating students and collaborating with community groups, colleges and parents to provide support and advocacy. He works with a diverse population of students at Daniels and with the Gentlemen’s Agreement who have a range of challenges that the Committee recognized as exceptionalities.

Ms. Watson was awarded the Educator of the Year Award for setting high expectations for her students and always showing them love and devotion. She teaches the students who have the most severe needs in the county at the middle school level and is committed to meeting their physical, emotional and educational needs. Ms. Watson plans creative lessons and also utilizes technology to engage her students, who are all non-verbal.
