At the Jan. 23, 2017 Wilson County Board of Education meeting, the Board approved the recommendation that WCS add language to Policy 5540, which designates various levels of diploma recognition for graduates. The changes affect the current freshmen class of 2016-2017. These students will compete against themselves instead of each other. When they graduate in 2020, they can be recognized with either: Honors Diploma, High Honors Diploma, Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude. The students will have a class rank but a valedictorian and salutatorian will not be recognized. Districts throughout the country are adopting this model.
