Board of Education Meeting Oct. 1, 2018

Please be advised that the September 17 Wilson County Board of Education Meeting and committee meetings have been rescheduled to Oct. 1. They were cancelled in September because of Hurricane Florence.

Hurricane Florence

WCS is monitoring Hurricane Florence and the impact it might have on us later in the week. We are working with Wilson County Emergency Management to make sure we have the most updated and accurate information regarding the weather. We will be in touch with our staff and families through automated phone calls, social media, the WCS website and WRAL Channel 5 in the event that the school schedule needs to change. You can also call the WCS Inclement Weather Hotline at 252-265-4037. Just a reminder that our Before School Care and After School Care Programs do NOT provide service on inclement weather days. Also, the After School Care Program does NOT provide service if school dismisses early due to weather. Here is a link to the ReadyNC emergency kit checklist shared with us by Wilson County Emergency Management. We are not trying to cause panic - we just want our families prepared just in case! Why I Teach - Leigh Anne Orr

"When students enter my room, it is home to them. I greet each of them as if they are entering my house and from the first day, they know that FAIL is the First Attempt in Learning and to try again. I am the teacher I am today because of the wonderful influences of not only my mom, but also of all the wonderful teachers I had in Wilson County as a student!"

WCS now ranks 59th in the state for overall proficiency out of 115 school districts! In 2015-16, our rank was 90th and in 2016-17, our rank increased slightly to 89th. This year’s huge change in our state ranking was due to our district’s increase of 9.1 percentage points on state tests – the second highest gain in the state! For the last two school years, Wilson County Schools has the highest increase in proficiency OF ANY DISTRICT IN THE STATE!

Principal Chilton Shining at Rock Ridge ES

Emily Chilton - the new principal at Rock Ridge ES who is also a Beddingfield HS and Barton College grad - was recently featured in The Wilson Times! She worked through the ranks as a WCS teacher and then served as the assistant principal at Rock Ridge for two years before being named the principal.

Kindergartner's Generous Spirit

Braydon Wells, a kindergartner at New Hope ES, recently turned 5, and he asked the 75+ guests attending his birthday party to bring school supplies for students attending New Hope and Vinson-Bynum ES instead of gifts! His generosity caught the attention of Chick-fil-A of Wilson Owner/Operator Christy Proctor,
