Spanish Immersion

Wilson County Schools offers a unique educational program, Spanish Immersion, at Frederick Douglass Elementary School. In the program, students are taught in both Spanish and English. If you are interested in the program for your incoming kindergartner, attend Kindergarten Registration at your base school on March 11 from 2-6 p.m. and then attend the upcoming Information Session at Frederick Douglass ES.

The Information Session will be held at Frederick Douglass ES from 5-6 p.m. on April 16 for parents who have already completed an application for the Spanish Immersion Program and those who are considering applying. Parents with students in the first grade who are interested in Spanish Immersion for their child are invited as well.

Content areas in the kindergarten Spanish Immersion classroom are taught 50 percent in English and 50 percent in Spanish. Students are taught to read, write and converse by being immersed in both languages. Assessments will be completed in English and Spanish. Students will gain exposure to other cultures, excel academically and be prepared to meet the challenges of a global society.

Participation in Spanish Immersion requires a basic commitment from families. Submission of a reassignment form is required if your child lives outside of the Frederick Douglass ES district. Students must adhere to the attendance, behavior and academic guidelines.

Parents/guardians interested in enrolling their kindergartner or first-grader in Spanish Immersion should contact:
