Gentlemen's Agreement
The Gentlemen’s Agreement is an achievement program that was created by Wilson County Schools in 2015 to enhance the leadership potential of male students. The program is offered at the elementary (4th & 5th grade), middle and high school levels. Currently, the program is located Wells and Vick Elementary; Darden, Elm City and Speight Middle Schools; and Beddingfield, Fike and Hunt High Schools. While the Gentlemen's Agreement was originally created with a focus on African American males, all male students at participating schools are eligible to participate.
The students in the program are surrounded with positive outlets that affirm and celebrate who they are as talented, gifted and contributing members of the community. The affirmation enhances their self-perception so now they can determine who they are and what they can become - rather than having society define their value and their worth. The objective of the program is to adequately equip these young men with the tools needed to secure viable employment and create entrepreneurial opportunities for themselves, while at the same time ensuring they are driven by high moral and ethical values. In short, the program aims to aid the young men in becoming gentlemen.
Since the program's inception, students have participated in various activities, experiences and learning opportunities, such as visiting Greensboro, NC; Washington, DC and Atlanta; GA; campus tours of colleges and universities; team building exercises; sporting events; and much more! When our young men engage in these opportunities outside of the classroom, they are becoming more confident, informed and prepared for future academic and career endeavors.
We are thankful for the community support that the Gentlemen's Agreement Program receives. For more information on how to support the program, contact Executive Director of Human Resources Claudia Spencer at claudia.spencer@wilsonschoolsnc.net.
