Weapons Detection System
Beginning the first day of school on Aug. 26, our three traditional high schools will have EVOLV and OpenGate weapons detection systems in place at the entrances. Unlike metal detectors, these systems will allow students, staff and families to simply walk through them without stopping or emptying their pockets or entire bags. However, students will need to remove their laptops from their backpacks and hand those to a staff member before walking through the systems. In addition to laptops, some eyeglass cases with metal hinges, 3-ring binders and stainless steel water cups will also need to be removed before proceeding through the systems.
Each system is monitored by a staff member and alerts school leaders if a potential weapon is detected. The technology looks for weapons and can identify dangerous items inside bags and pockets. Our staff members have been trained on the systems, and we ask for your support as we work together to maximize the benefits of having this additional layer of safety. These systems are also used at athletic stadiums across the nation and will provide enhanced safety without compromising the welcoming culture we’ve developed in our schools. Should you have any questions, please contact your student’s principal, Dr. Renfrow. Thank you.
