WECA Student Speaks at STEM Conference
Shout Out! to Lydia, a freshman at Wilson Early College Academy (WECA)! She was selected to give the keynote address at the Women in STEM Conference held Nov. 1 at Bowling Green State University in Ohio! The purpose of the conference was to share with young women all of the opportunities available to them in the STEM field. Though she’s only in 9th grade, Lydia is an inventor and has received national recognition for her efforts. She invented a bracelet that recognizes recurrent movements associated with anxiety and delivers a warning signal to the user when it detects that the movement is going to be repeated. She also invented a car seat that can tell when a child has been left in a vehicle that will call emergency services when the temperature becomes dangerously hot. Lydia also works to reduce e-waste and co-founded a nonprofit that collects, repairs and redistributes used gaming systems to keep them from piling up in landfills. We are so proud of her!
